Crossing a border is never a fun experience, true. But it doesn’t have to be a painful one either. As at many border crossings, just being relaxed and prepared makes them much less stressful.
Crossing the border in the North of Vietnam to Laos at the Tay Trang border was pretty relaxed overall. Out of our bus, the only guy that had an issue was the one that wasn’t prepared with clean crisp USD to pay the visa fee. He got it sorted but it took an extra 20min of him asking everyone in sight for USD to exchange.
Be prepared. It was quite a long tiring journey from Sa Pa, Vietnam to Muang Khoa, Laos, of about 17 hours but at least we were in a sleeper bus on the first 8 hour bus and the daytime had beautiful views all the way which grabbed your attention.
Important Information:
– Departure point: Flaco Hostel, Sa Pa (Recommended)
– The bus price we paid vs price we could have paid (460k vs 300k) VND / Person from Sa Pa to Muang Khoa
– Buy from departure point vs from website (saves money)
Laos Immigration:
– 30 – 42 USD depending on citizenship. 35 USD for US citizens
– (Didn’t ask us for passport photo but could. It is always a good idea have extra when traveling)
– 30k kip stamping fee
– On weekends there is also a small fee for medical check
– Only accepts US dollars that are in GREAT CONDITION (be prepared)
